Hasan Malik : Soul/RnB Musician

Hasan Malik, a Dubai-based performer, has come a long way since he first learned to play the piano at the age of 5. After dedicating much of his childhood to music, Hasan made his national debut in front of 10,000 people at Red Fest DXB at the age of 16. Now, Hasan is a regular performer at Open Mic nights all across the Emirates. We sat down with him to talk about his journey as a musician and the music scene here in Dubai.

How did your journey as a musician start?
Music has always been, and remains, a large part of my life. I suppose music itself has always been inside of me – the journey has been discovering more and more instruments and sounds from different countries, people, and cultures, and attempting to forge my own identity as a musician from what I have gathered from the world of music around me.
What’s your dream as a musician?
My underlying desire, whether it be through music or other forms of empowerment, is to improve the lives of those whom don’t have the means to do so themselves. This can be achieved through events and initiatives such as charity concerts, the construction of schools and hospitals, or even far simpler things such as brightening up someone’s week with half an hour of live music. Through becoming a renowned performer, my ability to do all these things is only heightened.
Tell us about your songwriting process?
The inspiration for the songs I write can come from anything or anyone, so I’m constantly writing, humming melodies, and recording voice-notes as I go about my daily life. I’m admittedly a perfectionist when it comes to finding the right lyric or right note. More often than not, I’ll leave a piece of work unfinished and revisit it over a period of a few days or weeks until it is as I imagined it to be. After studying songwriting for a few weeks at Berklee College of Music in Boston, it became clear that writing is something that can’t be forced, nor can it be planned.

Have you released any music recently?
With regards to recent releases, my song, ‘For Now’, was featured on GoPlaytheWorld Volume 1 – the album, which is a collection of 6 songs from regional artists – reached Number 1 on iTunes Middle East, which was a great indicator of the potential of local music. There’s definitely more music to come!
What can we expect from you in the future?
This year is huge for both me personally and for the scene itself. I’ve been blessed to have grown with the scene thus far, and can only hope that it all continues in the same manner this year. As I get older and closer to recording a full length album, the focus will be once more be on mastering my performance and set, and fine-tuning my song-writing. I also hope to increase my collaboration with other great musicians across Dubai. I’ve learnt so much already from the shows of the many musicians who perform across the city, and have made some great friends along the way too.
