Celebrating 80 years of Monopoly

On Tuesday, 2nd June, 2015, one of the most popular board games, MONOPOLY, celebrated its 80th anniversary, at the Mall of the Emirates, Dubai. In effort to commemorate the event, MONOPOLY built a life-size interactive model of the board game, and invites their customers and fans alike to play at City Centre Deira, Mall of the Emirates and Mirdiff City Centre from June 2 to the 15, 2015.

The three shopping malls, MONOPOLY and Majid Al Futtaim have come together and taken the initiative to convert the virtual money earned by players in the game into real money which would be donated to Red Crescent, a humanitarian organization that promotes the spirit of solidarity and compassion among community members, to help the people of Nepal. The custom made board will include some of the UAE’s famous and popular landmarks to honor the heritage and diversity of the Emirates. Sponsors include large companies, such as Sheraton Hotel and Aldo; all of whom provide instant prizes when a player lands on their property. The winner of the game after three rounds also takes away a voucher for AED 500.

To play, customers have to spend just AED 300 on shopping, dining or entertainment at the mall, and exchange their receipts at the board registration desk for a token in order to play. The game is much like the one played on the original sized board. The player will start off with 50 points and as they throw the dice, they have to move forward to the square that their dice score indicate

The game is highlighted and made fun with the giant 3D elements of the board game- such as comically large dice, and the life size counters used in the game. As you start the game, a jolly ‘80 year old’ Mr. Monopoly greets you, walks you through the game and entertains you with his lively demeanor. Mr. Jailer on the other hand, humorously plays his opposition, and is constantly waiting for a chance to put players into the life sized jail cell.

Alternatively, MONOPOLY has also set up large 3D houses around the malls for direct donation of money towards Red Crescent for those who don’t want to participate in the game directly.

Majid Al Futtaim and team attended the opening ceremony for a (Monopoly board) cake-cutting and to commemorate the event. “Along with the celebration of important milestones this year, Majid Al Futtaim wants to celebrate its successes by brightening the lives of those who are in need, while delivering our ultimate goal of creating great moments for everyone, every day.”, said Fuad Mansoor Sharaf, Senior Director for Majid Al Futtaim Properties shopping malls. Full of activity and excitement, the interactive 3D board game is definitely worth a visit! All proceeds go towards a good cause, too. Visitors of any of the destination malls mentioned above can participate anytime between 12pm to 10pm from Sat to Wed, and from 12pm to midnight Thursday and Friday.
